Graaff-Reinet - The Gem of The Karoo
The Town of Graaff-Reinet is situated in the Great Karoo. Established in 1786 on the farm of Dirk Coetzee. It was named after Governer Jacobus van der Graaff and his wife Reinet.
Graaff-Reinet is the fourth oldest town in South Africa. Outstanding examples of Cape Dutch architecture can be found in this town. The people of Graaff-Reinet have embraced their heritage and much work has been done to restore and maintain the many historical buildings in this lovely Karoo town.
Anton Rupert, a great South African, who was born in Graaff-Reinet has done much to encourage the restoration of the historical buildings in the town. You will notice that many of the old houses now carry the National Monument plaque.
The town now boasts an Art Gallery, a Theatre, three Museums and the beautiful Drostdy Hotel.

Just 14 kilometres from Graaff-Reinet is the impressive Valley of Desolation where centuries of erosion have created the impressive natural columns. Some rising up to 120 metres.
