Jeffreys bay sometimes referred to as the Margate of the Eastern Cape.
It is known internationally for its great surfing conditions and there have been people who have traveled from the other side of the globe just to surf here.
However, on an average out of season weekend, the quiet beaches make it a perfect place to spend the day.
Two popular events take place here each year, the Billabong Pro Surfing event and the Shell Festival or Skulpiefees as it is called in Afrikaans.
The Billabong Pro Surfing event brings people from all around the world. It is televised internationally and does wonders for the tourism industry in the Eastern Cape.
In 1849 a store was started here by two partners named Jeffrey and Glendinning. The purpose of the store was to channel goods delivered by coasters which docked in the bay. The settlement that grew around the store retained the name of one of its founders, even long after the store vanished.
Forty or more years ago, Jeffreys Bay was a quiet fishing village where local fishermen launched their small craft into the bay each dawn and life was slow and generally hard.
During the 1960's however, holidaymakers discovered the excellent swimming beaches here, where each high tide deposited a glowing treasure of shells
The town of Jeffreys Bay has grown incredibly and no longer is Jeffreys Bay only a popular holiday destination, but also a place where many people like to spend their retirement.
Unfortunately the main part of Jeffreys Bay has become so built up that the houses seem too be right on top of one another.
Jeffreys Bay offers all the modern facilities to make life comfortable and is not too far from Port Elizabeth if a special shopping trip is required.
Newer developments like Marina Martinique are more spacious and offer the quieter and more relaxed lifestyle you've yearned for.
Out of season Jeffreys Bay is a popular weekend destination for locals.
Areas such as Aston Bay and Paradise Beach are more suited to those who prefer the quieter completely away from the rush and the crowds.
Jeffreys Bay is most certainly enjoyed by children of all ages from 3 to 83.
