Uitenhage - The oldest town in the Eastern Cape
When the name Uitenhage is mentioned people immediately think of Volks Wagen. Uitenhage is home to many Motor Industry companies. VW, Goodyear, Hella, Kromberg and Schubert, just to name a few.
But Uitenhage is much more than that. It is a town whose people take the time to get to know their neighbors. Friendly and caring small town hospitality in an amazing community. Many people have lived there all their lives, never ever wanting to leave.
Uitenhage is well known for its Prickly Pear Festival or Turksvy Fees in Afrikaans, which is held at the Historic Cuyler Manor just outside town.
The Festival is held on the last weekend of February or the first weekend of March and is always well supported.
Apart from the wide variety of stalls, many prickly pear products are on sale.
Uitenhage is home to many good schools. Daniel Pienaar Technical School, Muir College for Boys and Riebeek College for Girls.
Uitenhage, 34km from Port Elizabeth. The name is derived from that of the district formed in 1804 and named by the Governor, J W Janssens, in honour of J A Uitenhage de Mist (1749 - 1823), Commissioner-General from 1803 to 1804.
This town is celebrated its 200th birthday in 2004.
